Interesting profile of Michelle Rhee

in The Atlantic. I've posted the link here rather than in the DC Public Schools forum because the profile is heavy on the political implications of Rhee's reforms, as well as the political challenges she faces. Lots of good background on the DC public school system, too. I've been reading Relentless Pursuit, the book about Teach for America, and this story dovetails nicely with it.

She was also in Parade magazine this weekend. Not real in depth, but focusing on effort the make the school system accountable.

As a taxpaying parent, I'm getting tired of seeing her all over the place and getting the same things rehashed over and over. Didn't see anything new in Atlantic.

Wish the media would let her GET ON with it and stop adding to the hype! Only met Rhee once, but she didn't strike me as a publicity hound seeking personal agrandisement. (Ahem, unlike her boss...)

Seems like her strategy is to get attention for more resources. That's fine in principle. But it goes both ways. The bigger the hype, the faster her efforts will get shot down and the last thing we need is more governance turnover in DCPS.

It seems like her portraits are always about her being confrontational. But there's never much about how much she actually has worked in and with the system. Unlike Janey, she knew what it was like going into the job and has skin in the game, so to speak, with her kids at Oyster. Which in my book offsets her being "just 38" and shows she has insider perspective needed to id the stuff that's really broken.

Personally, comprehensive staffing would be a monumental achievement IMHO.

The nuclear option of declaring a state of emergency could be a disaster. Hopefully it won't get to that.

well, that's about all parade mag is ... with their shallow questions in general, it's nothing more than fluff.
