My hvac company said I have mold spurs, dust and the stuff that collects in a homes vent system. They charge $600 plus and claim to 'scrub' and vacuum. They said other companies just vacuum which does nothing. Is this true? Have you had your system scrubbed? If so, how much did you pay and did it help? Thanks. |
There is also mold and dust in the environment if you walk outside. Perosnally, I'd say only do it if you had something really dust-inducing, like some renovation work done, as that gets big dust all over the place. Otherwise, jsut change your air filters regularly.
We used Dapper Ducts, and it was a lower price and they did a decent job. He showed me the junk they were vacuuming out -- we even found a contractor's screwdriver and wallboard scraps in teh ducts. |
They just vacuum and spray a chemical in. Scam. If true replace the ducts. |
I used Dapper Ducts also and paid around $800, totally worth it as both our a/c units and all the vents were full of mold. I realize this industry has a terrible reputation and I would never do this annually, but it had never been done in 14 years so it was time. Totally recommend them. Price varies according to how many vents you have - we only have one in each room so I think we were on the cheaper side. |
Interesting. I thought the price crazy when I get groupon deals for $50 |
We paid about $900 to Dapper Ducts, including a dryer vent cleaning (our vent is about 20 feet long through the walls). We have 2 HVAC systems and 4 floors. |
For small to medium house $200 is reasonable. |
The coupons are offered to simply get them in the door. There are always add-ons based upon the system and number of vents and many will charge more than $800 for mold. $800 doesn't seem unreasonable but you may want to try and negotiate with them. I had a client once find a video camera in a foreclosed home duct so I do recommend it but only every few years. I'm
not familiar with Dapper Ducts but feel free to check them out or any other company on the BBB website. |
Does this involve simply vacuuming or scrubbing also? |
My mold guy told me most vent cleaning places are scams. You want someone who sets up negative pressure and cleans the actual ducts, not the registers.
And don't let anyone coat your vents with chemicals. Will be worse than any mold you have in there. |
