529 Disbursements and record keeping

College age DS moved off campus and is off the school's meal plan. So now I can't simply have the 529 plan cut a check for room and board to the college. And sending rent checks to the landlord doesn't work because DS pays another roommate for his rent (roommate collects all the checks and pays landlord). And what about food? Do I have to collect every Safeway and Five Guys receipt? How have you handled this? Thanks.
