is it okay to follow up with employer? email or call?

I made it through second round interviews for a job I'm interested in. A former boss recruited me (I'm currently employed and though planned to start looking early in the new year for another opportunity, was not actively looking at the time), and I landed the phone interview before formally applying. My second interview was July 15th, and at the time, the HR recruiter from the organization said they were hoping to make a decision by the following Friday (July 26th).

That Friday came and went. The next Friday, August 2, she emailed me saying the committee hoped to make a decision by next Friday August 9th. I have not heard anything since August 2.

In the interim, another former coworker found out I was interviewing and told me of a job opportunity at her company - I've had a phone interview and am scheduled for the in-person interview next week. I'm not as excited by this job, but it's nice to have another potential opportunity. For the job I am intererested in, I know that I'm one of a narrow pool of candidates who made it through the second round, so I know they will be contacting me even if they did not choose to hire me, and frankly at the very least my former boss and mentor who is on the search committee would DEFINITELY let me know, we have been friends for ten years.

I don't intend to put them under pressure, since even if I do get another job offer, it will likely be a few weeks since I'll probably have to do two interviews and a reference check etc., but...I would like to check in. Advice? If it is okay to check in, should I send an email to the HR recruiter or call her? Should I send an informal interview to my former boss or is that putting her in an awkward position? Advice welcome!

Email follow up is fine at this point. I am a retained executive recruiter...as long as people don't bug me to death, it is fine if they follow up...I would also follow up with your mentor. The squeeky wheel really does get the grease.

Thanks. I just emailed my mentor. I will follow up with the recruiter later this afternoon. It feels weird because I don't want to imply they are sitting on info....but do want to remind her that I'm out there and still interested.

I'm in almost an exact position. I just emailed today. Hoping that the squeaky wheel does get the grease.
