leisure world

Does anyone have any info on leisure world? We have heard a little about it and are thinking about if for my 70 year old mom, who currently lives across the country, but really don't have any info on it yet...she is in good shape and has a young personality. A priority to her is to have a small fenced in yard for her two small dogs. Is it a safe area? Are there lots of activities? All input appreciated.

Leisure World is a very large complex and offers ample activities for their residences. They offer condos, duplex homes, townhomes and a few single family homes. I don't recall seeing any of the homes offering a fenced yard but you may be able to add an electric fence unless your opposed to it. Here's a link to their site for more information. http://www.lwmc.com/ If I may be of further ssistance, just ask.

My mother is in a duplex that has a fenced in patio - it's got large paver stones. I don't know about a fenced in grassy area, though there are standalone homes that might suit her?

My mom loves it there - she feels safe to walk every day with friends and there are many social groups (foreign languages, knitting, cards, games, etc.) so she's made a lot of friends. It's definitely worth a look!

FWIF. I took my active, young at heart 62 year old mom to look at some units and she kept saying "I feel like this is a place for grandma" (meaning her mom). It felt too old for her.

My ILs have lived there for about ten years. At 84yo, it is becoming a problem for them as there are no services of any kind and they are far from public transport (and should not be driving).

It is not a place for seniors who are declining.

Yes. But not part of Leisure World, and a chain.

A relative lives in Liesure World and enjoys many of the activities. She is in her 70s and is quite active so the community fits her and her life style. She does not have to maintain her yard (front/back) as that is taken care of by the community.

I agree with this. It was great while my grandmother was more capable and active, but not once she started needing more help. I thought there was a shuttle to the grocery store, though.

But because of the real estate bust and the fact of owning an only 1-br condo, we had difficulty selling said condo when it was time to move her into assisted living (which was also far less assisted than advertised, but that's a rant for another time). The houses probably do better.

My ILs just moved in--there is a small rental market also. There's one agent who works out of LW Plaza who seems to have the market cornered for rentals. There are garden style, high rises and houses. My ILs enjoy the clubhouse and meal service there.

PP here. Also, I should say that I also spent quite a bit of time online looking for other non-assisted living senior communities when they decided to move and found that there were not that many and nearly none if you don't want to buy, at least in MD. One other place in Rockville to rent, some super expensive places to buy in Bethesda. And that was it, everything else was tiny low-income apts or assisted living.

Leisure world never loses power, fwiw. It's a safe, gated community. Driving in the area is easy with a shopping center at the gate, along with lots of medical offices nearby.

My mom has been there for a year now, and I second all the above posts.. nice, safe, lots of ways to be active. And add -- a LOT of people there have dogs. Not sure of all the living options, etc..., but however they do it, a ton of people there make it work with dogs.

OP here. Thank you to everyone who responded! We checked it out today and my mom liked what she saw so far.

Well if she would like to move to a continuing care community, I recommend Asbury Methodist Village in Gaithersburg. They offer lots of services. They have independent living. I don't remember if it was a fenced yard, but there are condos and attached single story houses. If she is thinking about the future and can afford it, it is an excellent place. My dad lived there.
