checking carseats

Have you checked your carseats with your baggage? I have only checked tham at the gate. I have heard from friends that you should never check carseats with your baggage in case they get lost? Any thoughts? TIA

I have checked my carseat with my bags a few times. It's easier than schlepping it all the way through security and up to the gate. It has a chance of getting lost - the same as any other checked bag. But, if you're on a direct flight, it's less likely that it will get lost. In most airports, you'll have to pick up the carseat from oversized baggage area (instead of the regular baggage carousel).

I have with American Airlines. There were no problems and they didn't count it towards my luggage allowance.

If you do check the carseat when you check your regular bags, do you have to wrap it up in a bag or something? Or can it just go on the belt the way it is?

PP: Depends on the airlines. Some will give you a clear plastic bag and others will just check it as is.....I would recommend a seat bag so it will stay relatively clean. If the seat gets lost, most major airlines will loan you seats until they are able to deliver the lost seat...can definitely be a hassle.

Other options: if you are renting a car, some will also rent car seats also although for a fee.

We travel by air 3-4 times a year so I purchased the bags for the carseats. Keeps them clean and there's a handle and wheels to drag. Also, on the way home from vacation we inevitably stuff extras in there that won't fit in our regular bags! Oh, I've always checked carseats with luggage and never had a problem (knock on wood since I'm doing it again in 3 weeks!).
