How would you start building a network?

Specifically in the nonprofit world? I get the constant advice to "network" with absolutely no actual feedback. I am finishing an MPA program, left my old job (law) and try to really be friendly and reach out to some of the folks in my classes/ in my program. I've gotten a few recommendations to apply to positions through some people but nothing panned out.

How can I actively build a network in the nonprofit sector? I don't want to just let it build slowly/orgaincally since I am unemployed and sick of it! Any tips would be greatly appreciated (you have no idea how much!). I feel that I have great skills but not direct industry experience. BUT paralegal skills- dealing with fed agencies, clients, deadlines and lots of writing and my volunteer work really DO translate well into the organization and communication skills needed for NPO program associate/management positions, communications or development positions. I just can't get anyone to give me that 1st chance. I'd work like a dog for the right organization.

How can I build a network that shows that to others?

Are you on LinkedIn? It can be a useful tool - first connect with people that you actually know (personally, professionally), search for organizations that you are interested in and "follow" them, and then search the connections of your connections to find people that may be helpful to know or that work at the organizations you are interested in becoming familiar with. Send them messages asking for a coffee meet-up to learn more about X company or Y field they're in. This is more commonly done on LinkedIn than you might realize. Since you said your goal was networking I'm assuming you would know not to meet those people to ask them to hook you up with a job, but to meet them in an informational capacity so that later when the time is right you can re-connect.
