Cheaper alternatives for an engagement ring?

If someone doesn't want to spend a ridiculous amount on a diamond engagement ring, do you have any suggestions for other stones? (not fake diamonds, but other types of stones)

I like the old styles and the custom designs at the bottom of the page.

Why have one? We didn't and our marriage of 14 years is great!

Gemstones can be pretty pricey, too, but you can get a larger stone for your money that way.

Does it have to be a huge stone? What is your budget?

Despite what DeBeers wants you to believe, you can get a very nice engagement ring in the 3K range. It won't be a D or E/FL or IF stone, but you can get a mid-range stone that is well-cut for a reasonable price.

I don't have an engagement ring, just wear a wedding ring and my life and marriage are a-OK!

There's nothing requiring you to have a ring, or if you have a ring for it to have a stone in it. If you want something to mark the engagement it could be anything you want. Engagement earrings, cowboy boots, a moped, a nice dinner, whatever!

OP here, would like to keep it under $1,000. Only requirement is that the band be white gold.

who is the "someone"? op, if you are the man, you are going down a dangerous path. get a real ring.

Get moissanite -- man made stone that sparkles like a diamond.

Or a rubellite -- not ruby, it's a variety of tourmaline that's red. It's rare and quite exquisite.

This etsy shop has some interesting alternatives (some are pretty gaudy, but some are pretty cool)

Agreed. I don't have an engagement ring, and my marriage hasn't suffered. No rule says you have to have one.

Play around on Blue Nile with your white gold and price requirement and see what you come up with. You can get a small diamond ring for about that price. If you look closely, there will be little men in the stone shoveling coal, but no one will notice

lol, your little men shoveling coal comment is really funny! I'm actually wanting to stay away from diamonds. I want something different. Oh, i'm the woman. I don't want us to spend a butt load of money that could be better used elsewhere. Plus, I wouldn't even want to walk around with an crazy expensive ring on, I'd constantly worry about losing it, etc.

Go vintage and your price will a least divide by 2! Etsy has a bunch if you search for vintage white gold engagement rings. Local stores are more expensive but you'll get to try them out. They have some lovely old style filigree rings if that's your style. Most will have diamonds but its an old diamond. Sapphires are actually more rare than diamonds if you like the look. Alternatively you can get a hand made ring with moissanite etc for a modern look.
For what it's worth I have a vintag wring that I wore the year if out engagement and now just wear the wedding ring. (I love the engage my ring bunitnonly goes on when i go out.).
