WB Nutracker?

Anonymous
My daughter may dance in the Nutracker this year. Can anyone give me a basic idea of what dates generally we are expected to be in town to attend the performances if she is chosen to be in it and also how many practices are there? We are considering whether we will need to stay in town for both Thanksgiving and Christmas. TIA!

There are a couple of discussions of WSB going on in the camps and classes forum right now so this is a better topic for that forum, but auditions are the first weekend in October and then you pretty much need to stay in town every weekend from then until until Christmas Eve. There are no shows on Christmas or on Thanksgiving, but you need to be available Thanksgiving weekend.

The show is going through Dec. 29 this year.

PPs are correct. Other than Thanksgiving Day off, be pepared to stick around. In previous years we've had rehearsals as late as the Tuesday before (at TheARC; plan for traffic) and performances that weekend. You should not miss a performance or a rehearsal and you are supposed to be available if someone in another cast gets sick. There are always a few exceptions of top girls or high donors who skirt the rules, but it is noted who is missing or not available.

At what age and level do the girls get to audition for the Nutcracker?

I think that this year the first level to apply is Pre Ballet 3.

We just received the email about nutcracker auditions. At what point do they post the rehearsal schedule? I have 4 kids so we are busy on the weekends. My daughter really wants to try out. Are rehearsals all day long, several hours or just 1 hour on both Saturday and Sunday? This is all new to me. Do parents need to stay during the rehearsal?

I know kids who have had to miss school to make performances, and practice has run very late even on school nights. If you commit, you need to really commit.

Rehearsals start the weekend after the auditions, so you'll know quickly.

Last year DD (soldier) had:

1st weekend: 2.5 hours Sat, 1.25 hours Sun
2nd weekend: 1.5 hours Sun
3rd weekend: 1.5 hours Sun
4th weekend: 1.25 hours Sat, 1.5 hours Sun
5th weekend: 1.5 hours Sat, 2 hours Sun
6th weekend: 2 hours Sat, 2 hours Sun
Later that week they had rehearsals and then performances at THEARC. Warner performances started the week after that.

Parents do not stay for rehearsals.

Rehearsals are not always at the same time weekend, so you cannot make other plans.

Thank you, that is very helpful posting last year's rehearsal schedule. It is a lot of time, so we will evaluate if it is possible.

Unfortunately, Nutcktacker is a commitment from October-end of December. Forget about holidays. We have been doing it for the last four years! We love it

Great! Why do you enjoy it so?

Does anyone know what parts the level 1A girls receive? This is my daughter's first year at Washington ballet, but we saw the production last year, so my daughter would like to audition. She hopes to be a clown, but my sense is that those girls are more advanced. Thank you!

Clowns are generally level 3. Level 1 is more along the lines of mouse.
