I have a son who scored in the 96th% and I find myself thinking "hmmm, I think he is average." Is everyone finding that this is true? I am not trying to get flamed here, I am just wondering if all the kids in this city are pretty much 96th and up. I think my DS is great either way, I guess I am skeptical of the whole thing. Anyone else? |
This question has been asked several times in different ways, and typically most of the people who respond report scores in the high 90s. I've never seen anyone report a score below the 80th percentile. |
So I'd say, yes, you're right, don't take it too seriously. I don't. |
My DC's tester told me that a child that is highly enriched will test higher that a non-enriched child of the same intelligence. I think it would be safe to say that most kids around here are more highly enriched than kids in, say, Oklahoma. |
Yup, our kids and most kids we know got in the high 90s. So we don't feel too special. |
Yes, my DC scored in 99th %ile and appears pretty average to me. He is bang in the middle of his class at school, according to his teachers at our recent parents conference, and right at grade level. |
And in contrast, my DD scored 75th %ile (horrors) but when her new school evaluated her, she came out "very advanced" and first in her class. |
OP here....feeling like you guys are right. There are just so many people making such a big deal of these tests and I keep thinking "yeah, well...most of these kids are NORMAL" No one mensa in my house. I do not want to sell my little one short, but let's face it, if he were truly gifted, we would know by now.

It does feed into the debate about "why didn't my 98th percentile kid get accepted to such-and-such school?" |
Well, I feel like it answers a lot of questions about that debate: if EVERYONE is getting these HIGH percentages, then it is still ALL competitive. It is like they don't even matter....it REALLY is all who you know or if you represent a needed minority in the school (and by that I mean, if they have too many boys and need girls, too many whites, etc.) |
I think they matter to the extent that there's some blurry cut-off like 75% or 85%, below which you aren't even in the running. Although I also have to say that I know a kid with scores below what I've just quoted who got in on connections. |
My DC scored in the 84th percentile. We were told at the parent/teacher conference that DC is advanced compared to classmates. Don't take the score to heart, I think there are so many variables to the test that its nearly impossible to accurately score a 4 year old. School use it a an easy elimination tool to weed out applicants. |
