Eco Friendly Lawn Service?

Anonymous
I'm looking for recommendations for environmentally friendly lawn services. Our lawn is full of weeds and brown fungus patches. We have tons of young children and dogs in the neighborhood and don't feel comfortable spraying lots of chemicals. My homeopathic remedies haven't worked. Any thoughts? We live in Bethesda. Thanks.

There really is no such thing. Anyone who tells you they can do it eco-friendly is selling you a bunch of baloney.

What's your definition of eco friendly?

You might check in with American Plant with their landscape division. Some non-chemical methods involve soil testing and amending your soil appropriately (with lime?), aerating or just starting over and re-seeding.

looks like op tried and needs to get off the bs eco and use a real lawn service.

yeah, there really is not "eco" alternative except annual aeration and overseeding. There are some alfalfa-based organic fertilizers.

I would suggest hiring someone to aerate, top-coat your lawn with compost, and overseed in early September. Then you will need to water daily for the first week, twice-weekly the second, etc. And someone will come to cut the stuff. But unless you go with some chemicals you will always have weeds, disease, etc.

Either just live with whatever green grows (crab-grass, weeds, and clover included) or learn to live with a modicum of chemicals in order to have a great lawn. You really don't need a lot of chemicals, just weebkillers really, because a properly maintained lawn case use natural fertilizers.

As to who to do it, any of the established companies will let you pick and choose what to (or not to) apply.

I think you should abandon the uniquely American fixation on a perfect lawn. The only lawn that isn't awful for the environment is a neglect lawn.
