Volunteer Experience on Resume?

Anonymous
Do you include volunteer experience on your resume that will "give you away" as a parent? For example, PTA president, on the Board at X private school?? I've gotten conflicting advice as I attempt to update my resume. Thanks!

I would only include it if it is really really relevant to the position you are applying for.

Agree with 16:06. Whatever you do, don't try to couch your SAHM years and volunteer experience as qualifications worthy of a high position because you are CEO of your family. Stick with very specific skills you developed and very specific outcomes associated with your volunteer work.

I don't mind seeing it at the bottom, on the "interests" line. PTA is no more or less serious than "travel, cooking, karyoke, " etc. I would not make it a separate entry...

If your volunteer activities clearly stand out in terms of creativity, measurable impact, project management or leadership skills then def. list your specific accomplishments. Otherwise, less is more.
