Measuring big

Anonymous
I had my 24 week appointment last week and the doctor told me I was measuring big and wanted me to have another ultrasound. Has anyone else experienced this and what did it end up being? I HIGHLY doubt that it could be twins because I have already had 4 ultrasounds and I am really thinking that would have already been seen Thanks to all those who have some thoughts for me

I measured big and turned out I had extra amniotic fluid. There was never any reason found for it (no gestational diabetes, etc.) but I had an extra ultrasound and went in for nonstress tests 2x/week near the end. Delivered at 37 weeks and my son was 7 lbs 13 oz and just fine.

My dr. just told me today that measuring "big" isn't ever as much of a concern as measuring small. When you measure small, it could mean that the baby stopped growing at some point whereas measuring big could simply mean (like the PP said) that you have some extra amniotic fluid. Hang in there and don't stress too much until you know for sure what it is. I highly doubt it's twins though....! By 24 weeks, you would know, right?

I measured "big" and the only reason it was an issue was bc they thought perhaps my due date ws wrong and I was farther along than they previously thought. I just had a big baby.

Fundal height measurements (which is what I assume you had) can be off due to the baby's position too. Good luck!

I measured big -- about a week ahead -- from 20 weeks on. Had an ultrasound 2 and a half weeks before delivery -- baby looked fine, i had more amniotic fluid than normal (they said i was just well-hydrated) -- and estimated the baby's weight at that point to be 7 lbs 5 oz. I then delivered a 9 lb 3 oz baby 2 1/2 weeks later.

Run a search of the archives--people are frequently asking this question. Measurements are quite often wrong, although sometimes they are right.

I too measured big from about 20 weeks on--at one point was 4 cm ahead of the "week" (at 32 weeks I was 36 cm). I did end up having borderline gest. diabetes, diagnosed at 32 weeks and my daughter was 8 lb. 13 oz. However, my husband was over 9 lb.s when he was born, so I think some women just measure big, just like some babies are big and I would try not to worry too much about it unless your doctor tells you there is something specific to do.

I was measuring a week ahead from 25 weeks until 35 weeks and for the past 3 weeks have measured exactly right. The doctor told me that the position of the baby can affect the measurements. Now that my baby has dropped I am measuring as I should.
