anybody regret painting kitchen cabinets?

If so, why?

Also -- separate question -- if you painted your cabinets, did you also paint the cabinet interiors?

I painted the inside and the frames on mine and had the doors professionally lacquered to match. The lacquer looks like paint but is much smoother. It looked great for a couple of months, but I now regret the lacquer because it has cracked and chipped as the solid wood doors expand and contract due to seasonal moisture changes. This is mostly attributable to the fact that my doors are two pieces--a frame with an raised inset panel.

I'm not sure what would have happened had I painted the doors instead of using the professional process, but I would be cautious if your doors, like most, incorporate two pieces. I painted some in a different house and they've held up well, but those doors were thin, one-piece slabs--very 1970s.

Yes, I do. We had them professionally painted white using the Benjamin Moore cabinet paint about 18 months ago and the cabinets we use most often look awful. The paint has chipped and they just looked really "used." My husband says it's better than the alternative (1974 ugly brown cabinets), but I was never bothered by them in the first place. Writing this makes me think I could probably touch them up myself, though...so maybe they aren't SO bad!?

No, we didn't paint the interiors.

It was our attempt at a temporary fix (for about 5 years) while we save to demolish the whole darn kitchen!

Painted outside and inside. Even though we sanded down the outsides and primed, to make sure the paint adhered, within a year, the paint near several handles was chipping off. I don't know what we could have done differently.

for people who had chipping, was it veneer cabinets or actual hardwood?

16:11 here - ours are wood.

They look nasty very quickly.

Yes, I did because the original finished had shown through the paint. It's better simply to refinish wood cabinets. Good luck!

We painted the cabinets in our basement apt's kitchen 3 years ago (temp measure to hold off on renovation for a few more years). The paint looks great - like new - but the renters don't cook very often.

We did a dark brown with a darker brown rubbed over top to almost look like a dark stain. Probably wouldn't work in a brightly lit kitchen, but it looks fine down there.

This holds true with factory painted as well , stain is the way to go

Did you do a new stain with a professional refinisher?

Crap. Just finished painting my solid wood cabinets last week. Everyone ( some friends and online) said it was a great way to go. So far I love it. I did not paint the inside of the cabinets.
