Working at the Fed?

Considering a staff ( band 28) level job at the board. From a work perspective the job has "dream job" potential, but am a little worried about work life balance as I am a single mom with little to no help.

Dh works at the Fed. Not sure of his 'band' level, but he is part of the board's staff. He works 9 t o 5:30 and only rarely later or on the weekends. Same with most of his colleagues. Good benefits, nice really smart people. I say, go for it.

I work at the Fed. There is poor work life balance at the staff level and far worse work life balance at the manager/officer level. The officers in my division are traveling constantly and come in over the weekend, very early in the am (like 7) and often stay way past 6 or 7. Obviously I only know what it is like in my division. You probably wouldn't move up very far if you had to work set 9-5 hours.
