Private & Independent Schools

Does anyone have any sense of how students at Burgundy Farms do with the transition after 8th grade to other schools? I'm wondering how the transition goes in terms of both social and academic areas, and on the academic side, particularly with respect to math and science. Also, I understand that Burgundy graduates go on to a very wide range of public and private schools. Does anyone have any infomraiton ot add on that score?
Thanks so much. |

A fellow Burgundy parent has one child still at the school and another who transitioned two years ago to Sidwell. She said her daughter felt very well prepared and aside from the crazy commuting in various directions that the family has to do, all is well. I know of another family (similar situation, one child still at Burgundy the other has graduated) whose child is now at GDS. I've heard Field, Maret, and other schools mentioned by parents I do not know as well. I also know that kids go on to public schools. It's progressive but not so out there that a child couldn't adapt to a more traditional environment for high school. I think it would depend most on the child. I could see how a child might thrive in a more experiential atmosphere for the lower grads but by the time they get to high school some might do better in more traditional settings while others might do better staying on the more progressive side.
Burgundy does use everyday math (which has been updated to address some of the concerns in the past) as does many of the other private schools in the area. As for science, the children are well-versed in developing hypotheses and testing them (even at very young ages), so the school's approach is naturally in line with the "hows" and "whys". So the basic scientific method is incorporated pretty much from the start. |
