Just for (pretty straight forward) yearly tax returns
Is H&R Block good? |
| We use Keat Bhutani of Axxis Financial to do our taxes. I don't think the h and r block people are usually CPAs. Keat's fees are reasonable and he has done a good job on our returns for 2 years now. |

No, H&R Block and Jackson Hewitt folks are NOT CPAs. I've known a couple people who have worked for both seasonally and they have no financial or accounting background. They are just educated people who are taught how to use the H&R or JH software. It's like a private version of Turbotax.
I am a personal friend of Barbara Ames of Barkanic and Ames (http://www.barkanicandames.com) and although I normally do my own taxes, two years I had extra complications and we used her for those years and she did an excellent job sorting out the complications. I only include my friendship with her for full disclosure. They charged us a flat fee for the taxes, so you didn't get charged hourly rates, even for the more complicated scenario. |
| SnyderCohn. Very nice, good work, and while more expensive then a shop with HR Block they give thoughtful advice. |
I said my returns are straight forward. Not interested in overpaying |

I have used Flynn Accounting, LLC and have been extremely pleased. Reasonably priced and very knowledgeable.
Office: 240-477-4990 Located in Montgomery County-but most of the things you can handle over the phone or via mail. A+ |
| I use Rosenbloom & Associates and am extremely happy with them. Their prices were even less than H&R Block, which seriously F'd my taxes years back. |
I wouldn't use them. They hire inexperienced people who are not very knowledgable. They seriously messed up my taxes. Also, they prepared some W9's for some contract employees I had. They accidently put my PERSONAL social security number on them, instead of my business tax ID - therefore basically giving my personal SS# out to all of my sub-contractors, a few of whom I fired and were irate with me. Not people who I would want to know my SS#. |
| How much should a straight toward tax return cost? |
If your returns are straightforward, get Turbo Tax. My 16 year old could do ours (correctly) with no assistance. |
|
We have used Aaronson for our not-excessively-complicated, but not-extremely-straightforward taxes, and the cost as far as I recall is around $800.
If your taxes are REALLY straightforward, then it should cost you $50 to get some software and do it yourself. |
|
Also, I have used H&R Block's online software myself before, when my taxes were EXTREMELY easy to do, and that worked out well. I think it's basically free, but I may have ended up paying $30 or $50 for e-filing:

| If your return is straightforward just get turbotax. |
| OP here, I've been using turbo tax but I will be doing itemized deductions for the first time |
