Where to get reasonably-priced natual peanut butter?

Anonymous
Title says it all! We eat a lot of peanut butter at our house and I'd love to find a way to get it cheaper. I'm looking for the stuff that is literally just one ingredient - peanuts!

TIA!!!

Buy peanuts and make the peanut butter yourself, at home. That's what we do. It's as cheap as peanuts, and we keep one jar of chunky and one of creamy so everyone is happy.

Go to WF or Fresh Market and use the grinder thing.

Moms in Rockville had a grinder as does the one in Merrifield. The one in Alexandria does not but has fresh ground peanut butter packaged in bulk containers

We love nature valley from Giant. We store it upside down and behold! No stirring needed if it's been in the cupboard for a week or 2 first.

Sorry - not Nature Valley. But Natural Organics? The brand that seems to make foods in all categories - rice, chicken, salsa, etc.
it's peanuts + salt I believe.

Yes, make it yourself. Natural peanuts are around $3.29/lb and that's the only ingredient when we make (no need to add oil) so that's what it costs. The kind you can grind at WF or similar usually is slightly higher per pound than that but you can check when you buy the peanuts. Just throw the peanuts in cusinart and let it rip until you are at the desired consistency. About 5 mins for me but I like it super liquefied. If you like chunky, hold out about 1/3 of the peanuts and add them when the rest of the peanut butter is about 2/3 of the way to smooth.

In my experience commercially-grown peanuts can be quite contaminated. Even if they are classified as organic you cannot be sure that there is no Heavy Metal in the soil.

I just hired a couple of "Hill-Billy" types to clear 1/4 acre of our place in WVA and planted my own. They were almost pathetically glad of the work, and hopefully they will put some of the money they earned towards better dental care. Late summer the whole family goes down to harvest and press the peanuts.

Make sure the soils is sufficiently acidic.

Is it more work that going to the store?
Yes, certainly.
Is it worth it for the high quality result?
Yes, in my opinion.
Do I look down on people who take the lazy option and go to the store?
No, everyone must do what is right for their own family.

Do you grow your own cotton and make tampons too? Do you have a cow and/or goat that you milk for everyday consumption?

I think the person meant Nature's Promise, which is Giant's healthy line. We really like the Whole Foods 365 natural PB. I couldn't tell you though if it was super processed or loaded with anything and I definitely do not make my own PB at home. Maybe if there were 28 hours in a day, but I'm too busy making my own yogurt and growing my own strawberries and oh wait, no, I'm just here at work.

Nature's Promise from Giant. Peanuts and salt, and it stays spreadable even if you keep it in the fridge to keep it from separating. No idea how they achieve that, but that quality alone keeps me loyal. The WF grinder thing works pretty well for this too - no separating and you can keep it in the pantry. I don't find either one cost prohibitively expensive.
