Hi All,
I am looking for volunteer opportunities for a mother and kid. The kid is around 12 yr old. Idea is for the kid to learn to respect others, be thankful, learn to communicate well by overcoming shyness, contributing to the society, build confidence in his or her self. I can volunteer with the kid initially till he/she will get used to the place and learn the work. I attend weekend technology classes so I can only volunteer for 3 to 4 weekends initially (if the volunteer job is on a weekend) Volunteer job where this kid has to teach/tutor younger kids is more than welcome. This will not only re-enforce things learnt but also teaches to communicate clearly. if the job provides mentors to show or point out right way to do the job, then that is all the more great. Kid can teach up to 6th grade compacted math. volunteer opportunities at Local library does not work. I already asked them and they said 13 years or older are only allowed. want the kid to start working this summer (only around a month of summer left). any good advice is welcome. |

OP here: Looking for a volunteer opportunity for the kid actually. But i am willing to help out till the kid can do actually learn the task at hand or if there is a mentor present to teach then that is great. |

Wow. You ask for a lot on short notice. You might try the Salvation Army - they are in the midst of a backpack program trying to assemble backpacks with necessary school aids for poor kids - but the S/A is well organized and probably has everything laid out. You also have a liability issue if you are not present because most charities have to make sure children are supervised. Do you participate in a church or temple? Ours has a food kitchen that always needs volunteers and is accepting of youth volunteers. The Lions Club has a wonderful eyeglass matching program wherein volunteers take donated eyeglasses, drop them in a machine which reads the prescription, then volunteers write up the script package the eyeglasses to be sent around the world to needy people who need that particular script. My son has done that program through Scouts. I don't know if they would take a 12 year old. I'll give it more thought and post back . . .

OP here:
Thank you for posting your advice. will wait for more advice. I will be willing to stay there to supervise the kid, but dont want to hover over the kid. Will adjust my work and classes accordingly if needed. spoon fed the kid too much. Now trying to reverse it and want to see if the kid can help others which will in turn help him or her. |

OP, if you can be there with child, do try the Lions Club eyeglass program. It was great fun for my son and they do need volunteers to match up the scripts, but it must be done accurately so the proper glasses can make it to those that need it. Son was probably 14 when he did it through boy scouts.

| I don't know where you live, but here's a start for the Lions eyeglass volunteer program. http://volunteer.truist.com/acvo/org/10316225436.html |

Here's the info for the Salvation Army National command for the D.C. area. You can try calling them and seeing if they need volunteers for the backpack program or any other volunteer opportunities. http://salvationarmynca.org/
