Should I follow up if I don't hear anything by tomorrow?

A job opportunity dropped into my lap; a former supervisor thought I might be interested and they are having trouble finding the right person. I've had a phone interview, first interview, second interview.

While I don't know how many "final" candidates making it to the second round, judging from informal conversations with my former supervisor who was recruiting me, not many. So, I assume if I don't get the job they will let me know as this is not a big pool; the HR department has been extremely professional and courteous and with only a few final candidates, can only assume they will be contacting me one way or the other.

The HR hiring contact told me they wanted to move to the next level within two weeks which is tomorrow. Next level would be final process before official offer - checking references etc.

If I don't hear anything by this time tomorrow, should I give her a call? Send an email? What should it say?

I wouldn't call on a Friday afternoon in the summer. Maybe call Friday morning if you are really antsy but don't leave a message -- they'll likely not get back to you -- or just wait until Monday. I'd do it by phone, not email, as that forces an answer and you can also get a sense of tone etc. Just say that you had your second round on x date, were told they'd move into 3rd rounds by y date -- you just wanted to know if there was any update, as you remain very interested. You don't have to speak for long -- 1-2 min and then just listen to what they say and the tone of how they say it. Being mid-summer, it's also possible that they are just being less efficient bc people are on vacation etc. so what usually takes 2 weeks, may take 3-4 weeks. Good luck.
