Circumcision in health and medicine

Anonymous
Jeff -

Why have circumcision threads been moved to health and medicine? This is a moral or religious issue for many people. For those of us who do not favor circumcision it is not a health issue but a cultural one. The evidence that elective circumcision has any health benefits is flimsy at best. However, it is a decision that many expectant mothers have angst about. (It arguably shows bias toward one side by determining that it's a medical discussion beyond other discussions related to pregnancy and childbirth such as epidurals or specific hospitals or pregnancy symptoms each of which has more relation to health and medicine than circumcision).

Please move the circumcision threads back to the expectant moms forum rather than hiding them away in health and medicine.

Thanks.

It's going to take a lot to convince me that a discussion of the tip of Prince George's penis belongs in Expectant Moms. I also take offense to the suggestion that the threads are being hidden away. The more people avoid forums because they think they are not popular, the more those forums will fail to be popular. Moreover, I just searched "circumcision" in the Expectant Moms forum and found 1681 records. I think the topic gets discussed often enough in that forum.

So this doesn't mean that you are moving all future circumcision threads to health and medicine?

BTW that thread was in expectant moms because that was where related issues had been discussed.

Also, if it needed to be moved from expectant moms, off topic would be more appropriate.

Thank you , Jeff, for moving it out of Expectant moms. It was clear that people with certain agenda keep starting the same topic over and over again and posting it in Expectant moms in order to convince others not to circumcise.

I am the OP of that thread and I can assure you that I do not "keep starting the same topic over and over again". In fact Jeff can confirm that that thread is the first and only thread that I have started on that topic (though I have contributed to threads started by others). He can also confirm, or you can take a look that the last two threads on circumcision in the Expectant Mom forum were started by people with the opposite "agenda" to mine. The topics were on drinking during pregnancy and circumcision and what mothers would say to their uncircumcised sons when they were older (posted by someone who assumed that there was something to say). The thread on the Royal Prince and cultural attitudes to circumcision had just as much right to be in that forum as did either of those ridiculous posts (particularly as it was a counterbalance to them) and yet, neither of them were moved - I think this tells us something about the moderators view on the topic, which is a shame.

The only recent posts that have been posted in favor of circumcision have been from Jewish women looking for advice on how to handle their families reaction to their discomfort around circumcision/decision not to circumcise. Hardly an "agenda".

Not now being, never having been, nor ever expecting to be an expectant mom, I have very little incentive to read the Expectant Moms forum. I review threads that are reported to me. If you feel that only one side of the debate is being moved, then perhaps only one side of the debate is being reported to me. Though, given that these threads have plenty of messages representing opposing views, I'm not sure why you would assume that threads are moved because of only a single message in them.

I was not aware that it had been reported. How do you report a thread?

Wish I could take a screenshot of how close the previous sentence appears to the "report" button.

You click on the "report" button that is in the lower right corner of each message.

Thanks - I had thought that was just for individual messages. Didn't realize it was also for threads as a whole.

I report threads all the time (but not the one in question) - I just report the first message in the thread.
