Uncompensated

Please explain the uncompensated jobs on USAJOBs. Are these for feds to come work elsewhere but continue to be compensated by their home agency? Or is this really for the government for free?

its working for the government for free. the idea being that you get really good experience and could maybe swing it into a job at the end of the year. (though i think it is unlikely that an agency that needs to recruit free lawyers now will have money to hire them a year from now. especially when we are all being told to expect furloughs next year.)

source -- i am a doj lawyer whose division is advertising for these. apparently we get hundreds of applications (though maybe not everyone who applies is truly interested or realizes it is really unpaid).
