where to buy a suit off the rack??

Anonymous
I'm shorter than average (and plumper than I'd like to be) so suit buying is always a challenge for me -- suffice it to say, I don't work at a job where I need to wear a suit often, or really ever! But now I'm going on interviews and I need a new suit -- GAH!!! I don't want to spend tons of money for something I know I won't wear that often after I get a new job, but I also don't want to "make do" with something that doesn't fit right or make me look good. So: where can I find a petite size 12/14 suit that meets these criteria in the DC/Arlington area?? Thanks.

Macy's. They have a pretty stocked petites section and good selection.

Nordstrom, BCBG

I'm your size and love the suit I got at Ann Taylor when they were having a sale. As mentioned, Macy's also has a very good petite section (Macy's in the Montgomery Mall in Bethesda and the Metro Center Macy's have big petite sections with lots of suits). Stay away from the Ann Klein brand, though--it falls apart quickly in my experience. There's an Ann Taylor across from the Metro Center Macy's. You'll find something that you look good in!

Oddly enough Men's Warehouse isn't too bad if you're not looking to spend a lot. Else, Macys is another option.

Macy's. You MIGHT have to get the pants shortened, but any dry cleaner/tailor can do that in a day. I recently needed a suit - I got a Jones one at Macy's. It was on sale. They also have some beautiful shells to wear under the jacket right now that are on sale.

I bought a suit and two shells for under $200, which for the quality, is excellent. You never know if you'll need the suit again, having a semi-decent one is a good investment.

I have found a couple really cute suits at Macy's on sale for under $100.

Won't she look silly in a man's suit though?

I haven't bought a suit at Ann Taylor Loft, but the quality of their other clothes makes me not want to. I don't expect things to last forever, but it has to survive being worn more than twice without looking all pilly/hems coming undone, etc.

At BCBG, they only go up to 12 and in Georgetown I often have to ask them to get things in the back for and size > 6/8, so I doubt OP will feel comfortable there.

I am a size 14 and I suggest Ann Taylor on a sale or Anne Klein brand suits from TJ Max / Marshalls

Me too but I never thought of it as having a decent selection of women's suits.
