About to settle home sale:tell me exactly what to leave in house

Anonymous
All of the following items I have left through the showings; I thought it would be helpful to just leave them.
Bathrooms: toilet plunger, toilet bowl brush (both under sink) and extra toilet paper?
House paint in basement?
Extra light bulbs in hall closet?
Welcome mats in and out?
Appliance manuals?
Windows: valences? Sheers?
Kitchen: three unopened paper towels?

Big ewww on the plunger and toilet brushes.

That would be a huge annoyance and gross out to have those items left behind.

Don't forget the garage door opener and any remote controls for the ceiling fans.

If you have time, it would be helpful to write on the paint cans which room it is for. I came into a house with several shades of taupe -- not entirely sure which can is for which room.

Also, if you purchased anything like a roof with a warranty or new windows, leave some of that information.

Agree with the others that you should get rid of the toilet brush, but leaving a roll or two of paper is a nice gesture.

If you have a flat range and it has a grill component, remember to leave that. We had never, ever used the grill component and our movers managed to wrap those pieces up so we had to return them to the purchasers. Also, anything having to do with an auto. fireplace (gadgets used to turn fireplace on) or sconces should be left. You sound like a very nice person - your purchaser is lucky.

When I leave, I will leave behind photos and a layout of my garden with all the plants identified. But that is because I loved my garden and know where everything is, so if sold during winter, I can identify where the annuals are - where the spring bulbs will come up. But that's overkill.

Also, if you understand the valves to your hot water heater, you might want to tag what the various lines run to. A seller did that for me and I appreciated the effort.

Just leave it broom clean bare to the bones unless otherwise agreed to in the contract.

Good list. I would also take a minute to label the paint cans with the room they were used for, unless it's really obvious.

I think all of the items you listed are fine to leave behind, it's not excessive. My sellers also left a large file of receipts and owners' manuals which was so helpful to know how old things were.

And leave any remotes in a really obvious place or take them to closing. I took my garage remotes to closing to hand them off to the new owners.

Big yes on labeling the paint cans. I inherited paint which I was grateful for but it would have been so much better if it had been labeled, or if a list had been provided (I asked for it but the owner had died and the kids didn't know). I think I left a paint list for my buyers.

We left the business cards of contractors or businesses we used for the house/yard. I know when we had to have a dead tree taken down, we got a discount from the company because they'd done previous work for us, so we left their info, for example.

If buyer is new to the area, leave take out menus you may have on hand, at least for pizza and chinese.

We left a copy of the most recent town bulletin and highlighted the section with the pickup days for garbage, recycling, etc.

No to the plungers, toilet brushes and doormats.

You really don't need to leave extra TP and paper towels. I'd leave what was on the roll and that's it.

Not sure about the sheers/drapes. We immediately ripped all that stuff out and tossed it because it was dusty and not our style. Might depend what kind of shape they are in.

label anything that's not obvious and not already labeled - water main turn off, cat 5 cabling, etc.

instructions for irrigation system, security system, etc.

definitely don't leave plunger & toilet brush. also take the welcome mats with you.

of course leave all keys, remotes, instruction manuals

layout of garden would definitely be helpful.

labeling paint and disposing of any cans that are no longer needed (old/unused colors)

extra TP, paper towels, and bulbs would be nice

leave the garbage disposal key thing

I think the valences would convey because they are attached? not sure about sheers, but I'd probably leave them. you could ask them.

we also scheduled some time with the new buyers after they moved in to walk through the irrigation system (yearly maintenance, etc.) and other non-obvious things.

Very nice gesture. If you've had poison ivy growing on your property, it would also be nice to make a note of any places where it tends to come back. When we bought our house in the winter, I started gardening and landscaping like crazy in the spring. Had no experience with poison ivy. Ended up with excruciating rash systemic rash from neck to knees while 5 months pregnant! A little heads up to an unsuspecting or inexperienced (with poison ivy) homeowner would be very kind indeed!

We knew our condo buyers (not very well, though) so left a handwritten note and bottle of champagne in the fridge. Left toilet paper and paper towels. Also left the paint cans labeled.

I'm surprised by the responses about paint. Our contract specified that we had to dispose of all paint. Major pain in the *ss.

Oh man, I wish now that I had left behind appliance manuals, that could have been helpful and I didn't even think of it. Maybe I'll mail them to her.

I left behind lightbulbs for the kitchen fixture, because they were little halogen bulbs that can be hard to find. I also left behind some AC filters, and some TP (just a wrapped package of four, I didn't think my buyer needed 20 rolls)
