Do any DC Public High Schools field a boys lacrosse team?

Anonymous
I was chatting with my husband about schools for our children and he said that Wilson was not an option for our since it does not have a Lacrosse team. Growing up in an area where all schools had lacrosse, this was a surprise for me. I went onto Wilson's website and yes my husband was right, they do not offer Lacrosse.

Do any DC High Schools offer boy's Lacrosse? Charter's?
How about junior high / middle schools?

OR - if this is important to us, do we need to go the private school route?

Thanks

I don't know but I"m guessing that if it's not at Wilson, it isn't in DCPS. The only other school that might have a faint hope of having it would be School Without Walls but I highly doubt it.

What if your child doesn't want to play lacrosse? It seems a little silly to rule out a school because of athletic options.

Or a charter...

You could probably find a recreational lacrosse league.

OP Here - yes we absolutely could find a receational lacrosse league - but that does not get you the exposure you need to get to the next level.

My husband, 2 brothers and BIL played DIV 1 college lacrosse. So this is something that is a part of our family.
It is like saying to a musician - maybe your child will not like music - silly to rule out a school because of music options.

Thanks for everyone's responses. We will keep our eyes and ears out for changes as it comes closer to the point of making decisions.

Maybe you can start a team
but who would they play?

If your son is serious about lacrosse, then he should go to St. Albans or Landon or the couple of Montgomery County public schools where it's big (I forget which ones). There aren't any DC public schools with a lacrosse program, although I thought Wilson had a girls' team.

Get a copy of Lacrosse magazine (I think that's what its called). A recent issue had a list of the top 100 high school prospects. Then you can see what schools they attend. Many are in this area. I think G'town Prep is highly ranked, in addition to Landon and St. Albans. I assume you know this, but if he plans to play high school lacrosse he should be in a rec/travel league now.

Gonzaga (spelling) may be a more affordable private school with a Lacrosse team.

Do any of the private high schools offer athletic scholarships?

Did the OP even give her child's age? Maybe he's a toddler. Is there a toddler lacrosse travel league?

OP, now that I think about it, your best bet would be to talk to people in that lacrosse league -- bet they know a whole lot more about the options locally than most DCUMs. Good luck!

I guess I could be out of touch but I assumed in answering that a parent of a toddler is not already worried about high school lacrosse and potential Div 1 college play. Lacrosse does seem to start a little later than sports like soccer, because the stick skills require a decent amount of coordination. I think they start rec leagues at 7 or 8 maybe.

Kids, girls and boys, can start "soft stick" lacrosse at 4.5 years old at Next Level, a sport facility in very close-in Bethesda (just over the DC line off of River Rd). Then, at 6 boys can move over to traditional lacrosse clinics with helmet and pads. Girls can start real lacrosse at 8 (girl's is way harder!!). Next Level goes all the way up to high school level and lots of private school kids play there. Head First has classes and clinics for 5 and up through Wylax (I think). Bethesda Rec. has clinics and leagues for boys starting at 7 (based on birth year) and its okay if you live in DC. I think McLean also has rec leagues but dont know for certain. There are other leagues aas well. Anyway, there are lots of great places to play lacrosse in the area.
