Cuba

To lift the ban or not?

I am in favor of lifting the ban, with some convoluted hopes that the island can have a smooth transition to democracy.

I agree that we should lift the ban. It certainly has not done much to end the Castro regime, so it's about time we try something else, like letting the people of Cuba see Democracy as something other than an enemy.

We should lift the ban. But when Cuba liberalizes, there is going to be a lot of pain. Two classes will emerge- the emigrees to the US, who now hold considerable wealth they can then spend in Cuba on property, businesses, etc. , and the Cubans who remained back at home who have so much less. I wonder how they will be able to resolve this social dilemma.

I am afraid of Cuba being riddled with mafia making it look like Sicily of yore. That would be a problem for us, so close.

Actually, mafia would make it look like the Cuba of yore.

It would be pretty ironic thatCuba would return to be what it was before the revolution and Fidel. In any case, I am also in favor of lifting the ban.
(Lifting the ban, talking to Iran, ending the war, etc)

For humanitarian reasons after this past hurricane season, it would be wonderful if at least the family travel and remittance restrictions could be rolled back. Democracy and politics aside, families and friends are being hurt for no good reason other than politics. This hurricane season was horrible for much of the Caribbean. If we can't be friends, at least we can be good neighbors and put pettiness aside.

Hopefully the new regime (here of course) will help promote human interests over politics and not stand in the way of, dare I say it, change.

Whoops, 14:45 here. In answer to OP, yes. But lets get the basics of human needs ironed out first by letting people help people in Cuba and elsewhere.
