I don't know if I'm awful at picking watermelon (very possible) or if the store where I shop has a poor selection (also possible), but I've been so disappointed by the watermelon I've bought so far. Part of it is that I'm very picky -- I don't like it to be mealy or too squishy.
Where do you buy your watermelon? |
| Don't know the best store, but as far as choosing one of the larger ones, knock on the side and listen for a good sounding thump sound, as if the inside were hollow. Also, look for a fairly large yellow area on the bottom. |
| I get an awesome watermelon from Costco every time I buy one which is pretty much weekly. |
+1. THUMP, THUMP, THUMP. You'll know it when you hear it. |
| I, too, check for the large yellow area on the bottom. Always works. |
| Are you buying them from a Shoppers or Asian Grocery store? There produce is always too ripe or something... |
| I've been disappointed in the seedless watermelons I've bought this season, too. Funky texture, little flavor other than sweetness, and a peculiar aftertaste. |
| Costco! I was literally just eating some and in heaven. |
At least I know it isn't just me! Like I said, I know I'm pretty picky about watermelons. For those who asked: I usually shop at Harris Teeter. Will look into some of the suggestions. Thank you for the yellow/thumping tips! |
| Costco. We eat 2 big watermelons every week from Costco. |
| If you can find watermelon with seeds - I usually think they taste better. But they're very hard to find. I've only gotten them at the Acme in my parent's rural town. |
| The best watermelons are the dark green ones called sugar babies. There seeded but insanely good |
| I agree that the seeded watermelons taste better. We can get them sometimes at the farmers' market, but they're insanely expensive nowadays. |
Where do you find them? I don't mind the seeds -- I just want good watermelon! And the price doesn't matter as much because I'm only feeding me. I'll budget for great watermelon!

Ha! just a bought a watermelon from Shoppers that was way to ripe. Yuck. I've never bought fruit from there before and now I remember why. |
