I was told by dr. to get a flu shot but I am nervous. I get them when I am not pregnant but am worried about thermisol. Autism runs in the family and I am afriad to risk it. Any thought? |
Then don't get one. I don't think it's a big deal. |
Pregnant women can't have the nasal-spray vaccine, but there are thimerosal-free shots available. That way, you protect yourself and your baby from the flu and possible side effects such as pneumonia. Plus, baby might carry the immunity for up to 6 months, a bonus.

I didn't get a flu shot when I was pg and my OB was fine with that. It's up to you to weight the risks and benefits for your particular situation.

I got one after much thought - in part because this pregnancy has really weakened my immune system, as apparently happens to all women. Plus, I got the flu last Feb. and it was AWFUL. I deliver in March and didn't want to risk getting a bad flu in my last trimester, when the flu is most prevalent. But I went to the CVS Minute Clinic and got a thimerosol-free flu shot. This might be a good middle option for you.
Autism is scary, but this would be a vaccine to you, without any vaccine (or thimerosal) going directly into the baby the way it happens when babies are immunized. That made me feel better. Plus, the science is so mixed about autism anyway, whereas the risks of flu for mom and baby are well-established. Good luck. |
You may need to show a prescription for the shot if getting it somewhere besides your doctor's office. I got my shot at my last OB appt. this week. |
I also gave this a lot of thought but after talking to two pediatricians who both advised me to get it, I got it at the CVS Minute Clinic. It was thimerosal free. You do have to ask for that, but it wasn't a big deal. I did not need a prescription.
Basically the peds both said that if my daughter (due next week) gets the flu it could be extremely dangerous for her. Most newborns who get the flu are hospitalized. You should make the choice that is best for you, I know it is isn't easy...just wanted to share my two cents. |
I'm 8 weeks preggers and got the shot about a month ago before I knew I was expecting. I have no idea if it was thimerosal free. |
