SIL says preschool self-portrait teaches kids narcissism. ??

Anonymous
An art project at DDs preschool involved giving each child a print-out of a photo of their face, where one (vertical) half of the photo was printed and the other half of the sheet was blank. The project was for the kids to fill in the picture by drawing the rest of their face/head.

My SIL (husband's sister) saw it hanging on the fridge last night and started sneering at it, saying to my husband it was an exercise in teaching the kids narcissism because it makes the child the Subject of art. (DD was in another room, so luckily I didn't have to try to explain what narcissism is!)

Thoughts?

SIL is a bitch?

Your SIL probably doesn't know anything about art or child development. Onto the next...

Wow, your SIL seems rather nasty. Probably having a bad day. Just roll your eyes and forget it.

She has no clue. Over the course of my kids' preschool years, they did numerous self portraits. There is actually a point to this exercise, which is to see the level of detail that they recognize as well as size issues. One of the teachers had the kids do them every month and at the end of the year, we got to see the progress the kids made.

Ha! This reminds me of when I gave my DC #1 one of those soft little mirrors to look at as a baby and my MIL looked distressed, shook her head, and acted like it was really distasteful for me to entertain my infant by letting her enjoy looking at her own face in the mirror, smiling, and gurgling.

Anyway, what does your SIL think the kids should be doing? Tracing a picture of the Savior?

What is that supposed to mean, PP? You seem like a real gem, just like OP's SIL.

+1. Two bitches.

She sounds like my mother. Any evidence of pride or happiness with one's appearance must be SHUT DOWN. It's important to perpetuate the self-loathing begun by my ancestors many generations ago....
