How will you get your DC to school?

Anonymous
I'm a new parent to the charter school world, so I was stricken dumbfounded to hear that the city doesn't provide busing service to school. While I haven't been living under a rock, I clearly wasn't too with it about this. So now I'm scrambling trying to figure this out come August. What do people do? I'll need to get DC to his charter in NE from the Mt. Pleasant / CH area. Is anyone interested in starting up a carpool. I can't provide the ride, but can help look for a driver and paying. Any advice is appreciated. This a hard one!!!

Not to be rude, but seriously? You never considered how your child would get to school? And this is a charter school not even DCPS

We bought a car and drive. Our charter also has parent run bus service and extensive car pooling. Which charter?

Do you really want to setup a carpool to get your kid to school with people from an annonymous message board? That doesent seem to smart. I suggest you ask around. Perhaps you can find a college student who can do it, I have a friend that does that.

Maybe you should just walk to your local DCPS school rather than drive across the city for a charter.

Ask the school for a family directory by zip code and set up a carpool. Or take them on Metro/bus yourself on your way to work. Or bike with a trailer. Or use a zip car or car to go. Or choose a more local school. Those are really your options.

Charters are schools by choice; you don't have to attend one that isn't easy to get to.

OP has an attitude problem. Did she really expect the city to bus kids around from every corner of the city to hundreds of different schools? Wow. The city will allow DC school kids to use the city bus for free.

That is crazy. This never occurred to you????? You have been living under a rock.

We metro, bus, walk, drive... It takes hours a day. But is very worth it.

Only children that get bussed to their school are SN...and that is only to make sure they get to a school that best fits their needs. You didn't notice to lack of yellow buses around here?

We actually moved closer to our charter when DC got in. We drive, too, but it's only about a 10 minute ride. You'll figure it out, OP, and don't feel bad about the negativity from PPs, they are just jealous of your charter slot.

She shouldn't feel bad about the negativity, but she should be embarrassed by her stupidity. She doesn't drive, but it never crossed her mind to look into how she would get her DC to school?

No, I'm not jealous of her charter slot. We are happily at a charter that takes about 20 minutes to get to - and would gladly go twice that if we had to. It just seems inane that she went through the lottery process and not once did it occur to her that she'd have to TAKE HER CHILD TO SCHOOL.

Meh, sure its a "charter" school but its not private so I can see why the OP thought the city would be providing bus service.

Which non-private schools does the city provide bussing to?

How could anyone with a child going into school not know this? I assume since she can find her way onto DCUM she can find a way to google and have researched this prior to opting for a school not in her neighborhood.

So it's east to assume the city would drive one kid from Anacostia to Mundo Verde, one to Potomac lighthouse, one to Kipp, one to Meridian times hundred more scenarios times every neighborhood in the city? That's ludicrous and yes ignorant. So ignorant in fact I don't think you should have kids based on that ignorance.
