Vacation time for Fed jobs

Anonymous
My 50-something DH has been a GS14 for 2 years...he came from academia.

He says he gets only 2 weeks of vacation a year. So, just 10 regular business days of paid leave...that's all? Seems low, but I have no idea.

(I know this sounds weird, but I don't trust him because he is one of those weird people who doesn't like to go on vacation bc travelling stresses him out. I have finally accepted that I just have to go by myself, with DD, or friends)

Is there a baseline amount for all feds, and do you have to earn your leave over time, no matter what grade level you start at?

I'm mostly curious bc I'm applying for fed jobs myself.

Isn't it 4 hours/biweek (12 days/year) until year 3? And then 6 hours/biweek between years 3 and 15. Then 8 hours/biweek for anything beyond 15 years.

He accrues 4 hours of vacation time per 2-week pay period, so that's 2.6 weeks of leave per year. After 3 years, he starts earning 6 hours per pay period. After 15 years, it tops out at 8 hours per pay period.

13 days a year + holidays

also, his earnings statement will tell him how much he's expected to earn this year (at least mine does)

OP, you should see if your DH can get extra leave based on his previous career experience. Mine was an academic also and he was bumped up to 6 hours per pay period.

We're also eligible for time-off awards in our agency. A top performance rating usually merits a 40-hour award.

Although it sounds like he'll be at the 6-hour threshold anyway in another year.

It is completely messed up that you don't trust him on this! How can you trust him on anything?

Some guys that lie about vacation time engage in gay sex at parks.

I get 4 weeks a year, first year of service.

This for the first three years. After three years it goes up to either 18 or 20

That makes no sense. First three years you get 13 days

They might give it to him retroactively. Worth a shot, anyway.

People. By regulation, Title 5 federal employees earn 12 vacation days per year for the first three years of service. HOWEVER there is a provision that allows new Feds with significant prior work experience to earn more annual leave if they have highly-valued skills and make a case for themselves. That being said, no Title 5 fed earns 4 weeks of annual leave. It is totally possible to end up with four weeks or more of "vacation" if you earn credit hours and/or time off award, but that isn't guaranteed leave. And non-title 5 agencies (federal reserve, etc.) are a whole different thing altogether.

The main point is that there is not nearly the level of uniformity among federal benefits as people on this board seem to think.
