summer math packets?

Anonymous
I think our children's elementary schools said something about sending home math packets for the kids to work on over the summer. But the only work that came home in their folders was the reading assignment (sending in two postcards with some sentences about books they have read.)
I believe someone said something about the math packets being sent (or posted online) by early August. This seems late, however, and not great for people who will be on vacation in August. Does anyone know if they really do send home these packets? If so, how important is it to do them? (on that note, I'm curious what percentage of kids actually do send in those postcards? My kids are good students, but I'm reluctant to make them do schoolwork over the summer. I will, though, and yes, i realize that's a pretty small assignment.)

The school send one home for my ESer and it is also online. For my HSer, it is online only. In ES it doesnt' count toward your grade, but starting in MS it does. As for whether it is important, I guess that depends on whether you think your kids will need the practice over the summer. I always have mine do them because it's not really a big deal to get them done.

My HSer's packet is online. Definitely doing it since its graded. He always did them. It's good review for starting the new school year.

These packets are silly.

Our ES one came home last week of school and is also posted on the website.

I make my ES do workbooks - Math and English - regardless of what packets are sent by the school.

I also sift through other high performing ES websites to see what was assigned and if I find something I think is useful or challenging I let them do that too.

Through the year we also use beestar.org for assignments.
