I got a Fitbit and it seems I am walking more than I thought I was. I can easily hit 10000 steps and 5 miles just during my commute (which doesn't involve a long walk), wandering around the office, and taking the dog out to pee (she's skittish and doesn't like to walk far). What should I be aiming for? 12000 steps? Anyone else have this issue?
Are your strides set correctly? Are you wearing it in the correct place? Do you naturally step from side to side or pace vs standing still (for example, while on the phone?) If 10,000 is that easy for you, then bump it up! Push yourself. Aim for 12,000 or even 15,000.
I'm not sure what the issue is, unless you are trying to not-so-subtly brag. It's great that your day to day life keeps you active, compared to my desk-bound job I'd love to have that extra 8hrs to be moving. So, what goal do you want to set? An extra 3mi (~6,000 steps) per day? An extra 5?
I have a Jawbone and was surprised how easy it is to hit 10k steps. An extra 2k as a baseline certainly wouldn't be a bad thing! It's easier in summer.
I just kept trying to do more. 10000 is a suggested baseline. Keep adding more.
OP here. PP--Are you at a reception desk or on a customer service line? That stinks. I have a desk job, too, but I am able to walk around as much as I can--take the long way to the bathroom and kitchen, etc. I have notied that on days when I wear heels I don't walk as much. To the PP, I have checked to make sure that it doesn't register when moving side to side (sometimes I rock/wiggle absent-mindedly while waiting for the train). You can wear it on a waistband, in a pocket or on the bra, and all seem accurate. I just wasn't sure if I should just try to walk more, start jogging, or what. I know this is a baseline, but once that's hit, can you just be lazy?

OP your answer is in what your fitness goals are. You didn't mention anything about those. Everyone is going to need something different.

you can also alter your goals on the dashboard/website. For example, my "goal" for the day might be to climb 10 flights of stairs. But my personal best was 75 flights of stairs in one day.
If you're finding it that easy to hit 10,000 steps, I'd bump it up to make it harder to reach your goal. |
