Prenatal Yoga

Anonymous
I'm 6 1/2 months pregnant and have decided I want to try taking yoga. I wanted to take classes at the Capitol Hill Yoga studio, but just learned that it closed in October.

Can anyone recommend a prenatal yoga class in DC? I live on Capitol Hill and work across the street from Farragut Square so classes near either of those areas would be ideal.

Thanks for the help!

I recommend Autumn's class on Sunday at 12:30 at YogaChai, a new studio in Adams Morgan. It is a small, very personalized class & parking is surprisingly easy to find in the middle of a weekend day.

I've been going to Anne Thiel's prenatal class at Tranquil Space on 17th St, just north of Dupont Circle. Not exactly your area, but just one stop from Farragut North so maybe doable. Classes are Wednesday at 6:30 and Saturday at 12:30. I'd never done yoga before and really enjoy it. If you do decide to try it out, I'd recommend making sure that Anne is actually teaching that day (you can check the class schedule online). IMO, the woman who usually subs goes too fast and doesn't make enough effort to make sure the newer people know what they're doing. She also does too many back-arching poses without enough counter-poses, which seems to me to be completely contradictory when you've got a class full of women who are already likely to have lower back strain!

Try the 4:00 pm prenatal class at Tranquil Space on U St. Sandy, the instructor, creates the perfect mix of stretching, breathing and strengthening and always balances postures with counter poses. She knows our trouble spots (lower back), and works them out perfectly. She also brings treats.
