I'm not in the military or in a union, so the obvious ones are out.
Is there any quick and easy way to know which ones I qualify for? I'm about to refinance and have heard that CUs often do a better job than large banks. Would appreciate recommendations! |

Many credit unions have some sort of affiliate program that lets you join. For example Pen Fed lets you join if you become a member of a couple of non-profits that support troops/military families. It's a one time fee of $20 or so to join those organizations.

| Check with neighborhood credit unions. Only criteria is to live in the county. |

Here's another source. Put in where you work, zip code (of where you work or live) and it'll pull up credit unions you can join

| FYI, in my experience, most credit unions do not have the best mortgage rates (although Pen Fed and possible NASA are the exceptions). |
PenFed is woefully behind on processing mortgage applications. I think my 60-day lock expires today and they only ordered the appraisals last week. |
