Constant feeling of a heavy lump in throat- what could this be?

Anonymous
For about the past month, I've had this odd heavy lump-like feeling in my throat, almost like a burp is caught there or similar to that feeling when you're going to cry and you get a lump caught in your throat. For a couple of days, I had a sharp pain in the left side of my throat and thought I was getting strep (it was going around daycare), but the pain went away soon after.

Any ideas?

Heartburn? I felt like I had a pill caught in my throat for months. Finally mentioned it at my check up and goteds for heartburn. Totally gone now.

OP here. Wow, that's exactly how I've been trying to explain it to my husband- like I have a pill caught in my throat. Heartburn, eh? Huh. How do they check for it?

try some Tums and some Prilosec (over the counter) and see if that helps.

That feeling is a classic symptom. I just didn't know!

I had exactly this. Even had an endoscopy and it turned out to be acid reflux.

OP here. I think I have some Zantac at home for poison ivy (sounds weird, but I'm extremely allergic to poison ivy and my dr. told me take it to combat the itching from within). Will that suffice? Can someone have episodic heartburn or acid reflux or is it a once you have it, you always have it, and can only control, not cure it kind of thing?

Certain foods trigger heartburn for me. Mashed potatoes for some reason. I basically avoid them (not a bad thing since they are a white carb anyway). So you may be able to control it some through diet. Tums usually does the trick for me pretty quickly.

For me it was not heartburn, it is basically a cold. my sinuses get so swollen it is like it drops down to my throat and blocks there. (NO it was not allergies- claritin and benadryl did nothing. Only sudafed cleared it up, with afrin.

Thyroid issues can feel like that too.

My sister described feeling that way before she discovered she had a (benign) tumor on her thyroid. Go to the doctor. If it's "just" acid reflux you still want to treat it.

OP here. I'm definitely making a dr's appt. I was researching heartburn more which led me to acid reflux, which led me to dyspepsia. I shouldn't be self-diagnosing, but these symptoms fit me exactly. I've been having problems with extreme feelings of heaviness and bloating in my stomach, where I feel full very quickly and can barely eat. I thought it was because I started drinking whey protein more and that perhaps the whey was irritating me. Whatever it is, the abdominal bloating/heaviness plus the difficulty in swallowing plus slight heartburn which started today is enough to get me to the dr.

Thanks for posting.

Anxiety can cause the feeling of a lump in your throat. I had it for a few months before my wedding. Google it - it's really odd what your mind can manifest!

For me it's a combination of GERD and a Hiatal Hernia, and anxiety.
