What do you expect from APS staff (option/neighborhood) on 4/30?

Please. We live in Cherryvale and perfectly happy at Taylor. All of my kid's closest friends happen to live close to key and asfs so he'll lose his closest friends. We did not lobby for any of this. Even the families I know who live close to asfs told me they preferred to stay at Taylor so not all of us want this.

Let me be more specific then: the ones behind this fiasco suck.

They may have jumped on the opportunity, but they didn’t create it. Without neighborhood preference, Key has to be a neighborhood school. There are just too many kids around it for it.

The mass of ASFS humanity at office hours etc can now oAt themselces in tbe back and think they kept it as a neighborhood school. But really, it was the principals and the idea of putting both schools perhaps closer together and moving one to Carlin Springs.

Now, Tallento is going to try and prevent CS from becoming an option school crying about the traffic. But, she better lose. This plan makes much more sense so long as they don’t move ATS to the NW and make it the N Arlington free private school.

What is behind Talento and this hysteria about CS traffic? Does she live on that road?!
That neighborhood has thwarted any developments with her help, including the high school that will never be build there, due to “neighborhood opposition “.

I had seen written here before that choice programs were used to give north Arlington schools a boost years back, when enrollment slumped.
I think it’s wonderful that staff is looking to do the same for south Arlington now.
I’m shocked at this plan. I’m shocked in a really great way.
Good job staff!

Yes - I am pleasantly surprised!

Staff is getting hammered by a few loud voices from disgruntled parents.

Please write to engage@apsva.us to voice your support for this analysis. Copy School.Board@apsva.us, too!

Do you know who advocated to remove neighborhood preference from Key? It was folks from Cherrydale who can do basic math and knew it would precipitate this enrollment crisis and move Key.

The soccer fields around Williamsburg and Discovery are not owned by APS, the County owns them just like the field next to Tuckahoe. This is true at a lot of the schools, if not most.

Tuckahoe used to have a few trailers behind their school (in addition to the ones covering their basketball courts in the front). They were on a slope and completely out of view from the door to the school needed to be used. It was not a great set up. I am glad they aren't sticking trailers on slopes anymore or away from the view of the doors older kids are supposed to use solo to get in and out of school.

Agreed. The Facilities Optimization study officially determined that trailers could not be put in that second location at Tuckahoe. Trailers at Discovery is a fantasy on par with Science Focus becoming an option program.

There was an enrollment crisis at ASFS/Key even before they eliminated neighborhood preference, so I don't think this can be put on Cherrydale. That said, I assume this plan would negatively impact you, which sucks and I'm sorry.

Someone is talking out of their a**. And again, no, she does not live here. She lives in 22207.

They should allocate places at the option schools by ES zones just like they do for HB.

Honestly, there is little the community can say b/c there is not much capacity in the system and hard choices have to be made. People have to be moved. No one wants to move. There questionnaire is done.

And, everyone's community is super special and irreplaceable. No boundary change/school move will make people happy, the district just needs to have the balls to make a decision that works best for the district as a whole and not cave to the richest/loudest whiners.

When Nottingham is an option school and Discovery is bursting at the seams, it will end up with trailers. The safety valve of the enormous Nottingham lot will have been taken away and APS will have no choice to add trailers.
Anonymous
And how tone deaf is it to say that Discovery kids can't lose their fields, so APS would put more trailers at McKinley (the school who already has no field)??

No they shouldn’t.
They should encourage lower income families to explore nearby choice schools and encourage south Arlington middle class families to do the same. They should most heavily serve the communties that need them the most. That would be south Arlington.

Do you have any proof to support your conspiracy theory because I really doubt a few folks in Cherrydale sat around and connived about how to get ASFS as their neighborhood school by forcing boundary and option school changes for all Arlington ES and I've seen many posts by parents who live near Key advocating it become their neighborhood school due to the number of children living in Roslyn and Courthouse. I thought it had more to do with new ESs coming on line, balancing overcrowding and addressing the demand for immersion by people who did not live near Key.
