Transplants vs DC Natives

That alone says a lot.

I have been to both. They are NOT in the same league. Let it go.

Definitely. The entire punk ethos of DC, the same one that gave rise to Minor Threat and Bad Brains, has dwindled and now completely vanished, particularly over the past 20 years.

It's not the same city it was. The midwest transplants have turned it into a sterilized, homogenized, chain-store infested cesspool of sameness.

You are right. They must certainly be solely responsible. Are all natives this stupid?

This was the going rate back then. NOT just in D.C> Surprise! If you had left D.C., you would know. LOLZ.

Michael Jackson 3 nights in a row?

Are you kidding me?

I'm not even a Michael Jackson fan and I would so go see him over any U Street or H Street venue performer.

I went to the 1980 Bruce Springsteen concert and the 1984 Prince concert. The MJ concerts turned DC upside down - I was in college at that point but remember my younger brother talking about this with glee. There are a whole group of DC natives who remember that week fondly.

That list of concerts is amazing actually!!

It is, except it is from the internet.

You never attended a show at the old 9:30 Club. Stop lying.

Actually, the transplants are the target market demographic of all the blandness. They buy into all the hype. BIG TIME.

You are right. How did you know? The transplants are the exact targets of globalization. Those particular transplants. Are you insane? A rhetorical question, of course.

Brother Petey absolutely would have despised everything about the new DC.

R.I.P.

Natives who claim to care so much (not really) about this area should have been stepping up where it mattered, since they are so resistant to change. Just because a native says something is so, does not make it so. Hint: If you are unable to change something, it is time to not obsess anymore. Otherwise, you have yourself a mighty huge mental health problem. Time for some of the natives to seek professional help about their ill feelings and their dwelling on things they really (truly) have no control over. This is not about the natives, it is clearly about something else. Perhaps your in adequacies in other major areas of your life.

Change happens. There is nothing any local can do about it. Any attempts to rebel or resist against newcomers make you look worse and worse.

This is where you pretend not to understand.

Hey "natives",

The homogenization of culture has been happening everywhere for the past 30 years. Ever heard of globalization? Yeah, that's what you need to blame for your chain stores, your "blandness" etc. , not the transplants. if you ever left your little bubble of DC "native" friends you would know that.

And the use of the term native is totally offensive in this context. Unless you're a Native American, stfu.

Natives do not care when a real estate listing says a Trader Joe's/Panera is "merely footsteps away" from the front entrance of the condo.

Only a transplant would rant and rave about something like that.

So yes transplants buy into the hype more than natives do.

So far all we've learned is that rich, spoiled, sheltered kids in Upper NW and Montgomery County who grew up and went to school together tend to stick together. How does that differentiate them from rich, spoiled, sheltered kids in any other suburb anywhere else?

This is 100% true in this town.

- A native

Unlike other cities such as Boston and Baltimore, DC natives don't form closed off social circles. Social mobility is purely based on money (or political power since it's usually monetized later)
That's not necessarily a virtuous thing: it's just more of a user culture. If you can help me, you're in.

This is not true, at least in black DC. It's very closed. They will let you come to stuff, but it's still very closed. "Circle of Friends" anyone? I've been in DC since 1991. I'm from MD, but my DC days started in 91 after college.

I miss old DC.

Sounds hypocritical especially since it mostly has been the transplants who have been whining & crying about the recent uptick of crime in DC.

Well... Change happens.

The transplants keep on ranting and raving about all of the blandness as if it were the greatest thing on earth since sliced bread.

Well its not.
