Beauvoir

My sister is moving here this Fall and will be looking at schools for her son, who is a June birthday. She is thinking of applying him to Beauvoir, but was wondering if anyone knows the birthday spread there in the current 1st grade (so next year's 2nd grade). Particularly, are many of the boys in that grade redshirted or are there plenty of "young" summber bday boys as well? Thanks

My DC is a first grader, and there are plenty of late spring and summer birthdays (evidenced by lots of birthday party invitations right now.) A couple of redshirts, turning 8 soon, but they are the exception, not the norm. A boy with a June birthday would fit in just fine.

Thanks PP. Has your DC been happy with Beauvoir? Do you feel like there is a nice bunch of boys in that class?

My DC loves Beauvoir and his classmates. There are four classes (84 kids), and I don't know them all, but I can only think of a couple who are a handful. Most are really nice, well-behaved kids.

No, not everyone comes in pearls or khakis. But I will say, even when they come in sweats with no makeup on, they come in BMWs or Volvos. I was acutely aware of this lack of car diversity as I chugged up every morning in my 1996 Pontiac Grand Am.

BMWs and Volvos are poles apart. That's diversity right there!

What percentage of boys and girls typically go on to NCS/STA?

That's actually true. Volvos are democrats and BMWs are republicans. But they can find middle ground in a good game of golf.

Actually, having a Mercedes or BMW is so nouveau. The really crazy rich people at Beauvoir are driving decades old beaters. This reverse snobbery drives some nouveaus crazy, some of whom are "trading up" for those tiny tin cans like the Fit or Prius or Mazda 5.

False.... many of those are driving decades old Mercedes and BMWs.

How many/what percentage of Beauvoir kids participate in the summer camp?

Many Beauvoir kids are away for the summer. Also, Beauvoir camp runs young so kids in older grades start going to other school camps.

Speaking of Beauvoir parents and their cars . . . as someone who lives in the neighborhood, may I please make a request? Could Beauvoir parents please try to refrain from gunning it through the neighborhood, especially while talking on cell phones, in the mad dash to pick up and drop off your kids? There are 4-way stop signs (frequently blown through) and lots of kids in the surrounding neighborhood. I realize some of these people are also rushed commuters, NCS/St A kids, parents from other schools, etc., but a lot are going into the Beauvoir entrance. (And no I don't have anything against Beauvoir -- many family members and friends have gone there -- just concerned for safety). Thanks.

What constitutes "old money" in DC? A family that made that its fortune in real estate development in the 1960s?

Huh? lots of old money folks I know in DC are transplants from elsewhere originally, but may have been here for 40+ years. The money was made generations ago, often in other parts of the country. And, yeah, they do tend to drive real beaters come to think of it.
