Private & Independent Schools
|
For those of you who are true veterans of the private school tour circuit, what is your impression of the schools WRT their arts programs? both music -and- the visual arts.
I know some of you have visited upwards of 12 schools, and I'm very interested to hear your description of the spectrum. (I've been to 4 schools so far, and might add others depending on what you say). |
What do you have to share with us? what did you think about the programs you saw? Also what grades are you looking into bcause The Field School has been said to have a strong Art program but it doesn't have a lower school. Sidwell also has a nice program at the high school level but I guess I'll go for Maret. Maret has as part of its visual arts department a very well know artist:Maggie Michaels. Her work is own by the Hirshorn museum and the Corcoran Museum of Art.
Norwood has an amazing music and fine arts program.
OP here, sorry I forgot to say we are applying for K.
Norwood
Ditto. Norwood for art, music, and drama.
Norwood parent here. I think the art and music programs at Norwood are first-rate, but for drama, I would have said GDS. And I was impressed to read on another thread that Sheridan offers free instruction on some instruments.
Oh, I don't know, 20:23. I thought that K Halloween program was pretty impressive for K drama!
Any place in DC?
Yes, it was great! the kids had such a presence, and they sang so well and on key. |
Oh, I agree it was adorable. But GDS explicitly integrates drama into the curriculum to a greater extent and has a very strong program
GDS's drama program is very impressive.
Sheridan's program impressed us. We got accepted and went to Beauvoir instead. But their music program does not compare to Sheridan's I'm afraid to say.
Capitol Hill Day School's art program is integrated fully into the curriculum, particularly in the early grades. Art journals, self portraits, math paintings, embroidery, quilting, pottery, ceramics, architectural studies, sketching done at the arboretum, sculptures of fantasy animals, painted furniture, puppets, masks, various costumes, etc, still hang on the walls of our house!
