Not gonna happen. Sorry.

DCPS needs citywide options like this or it will keep losing students to charters.

It seems really short-sighted to make SWS a neighborhood school and not make any other changes to the boundaries of other nearby schools. DCPS can't control the existence or location of charters, but having two DCPS schools competing against each other seems to be a zero sum game. Of course, DCPS hasn't shown much long term vision in previous decisions.

Can someone explain to me why SWS should have neighborhood preference when other charters do not?

Before the 2013-2014 school year, SWS had always been a neighborhood DCPS school. It's not a charter school.

SWS used to be a preschool-K option as part of the Cluster. Now it is a citywide school that will go up to fifth grade.

I can't see how DCPS can close more than a dozen schools and THEN put additional barriers in place to keep those displaced students out of the few good options in DCPS that they have. DCPS can be shortsighted and make dumb decision but I seriously doubt it will take away SWS as an option for the citywide population. 300 signatures won't change that.

DCPS certainly doesn't need citywide schools like this because it is not to compete with the charters. They are an alternative to DCPS and hence can be citywide (even though I personally think that is a stupid idea too).

It just makes me very sad that my son has vitually no chance of attending a good school that is next to our house. If the only option is L-T he will be going to private school instead...

Sorry. Not crying for Hill schooling options.

I've been following the L-T thread, and it sounds like you are in good company.

Well, you are lucky that you can afford private. Many of us have crappy DCPS options and can't afford private. Having SWS be city-wide gives everyone a chance to get in. Your argument is the same that I hear from people who live near sought-after charters.

Haha, I am not sure if we can really afford it, we are relatively young and work in the public sector. The other option would to to move to another party of DC or the close-in suburbs... or somewhere else in the country.
