I work for one of the owners of a small company. I am not sure about the arrangement between the owners but think I am supposed to be paid by the owner I work for. Because the company has financial problems, I have not been paid for several months and really need my paycheck. And because it would be harder to find a new position if I were unemployed, I have not quit. I am basically working hoping I will be paid at some point which may not happen or be a long way off. What would you do? |
Definitely look for another job ASAP. Hopefully I lawyer on here can help you. |
I would document everything you can and take specific notes. Definitely contact a lawyer. |
Why not ask? The worst they can do is fire you. Which I seriously doubt they will do since you've been working for free. |
several months without a paycheck? How do they even have employees? |
why do you think it would hard to find another position? I think any sane person could understand not working for free. Quit, get a lawyer and find a job with a paycheck. Doesn't sound that hard to me. |
I know it's easier said than done but you have to confront the situation - be assertive and take care of you. What they are doing is illegal and further more, you are enabling the situation. By working and not saying anything or not getting paid is telling your boss that it's okay. And, it's not, we know. |
If you meet the financial guidelines, the Employment Justice Center in D.C. can help you. They have a free consultation clinic every week.
Can't you just quit and do temp work? Actually, before you quit I would check with your state unemployment office to see if quitting due to not getting paid would disqualify you from getting unemployment benefits. |
