Family Name Quandary - DH is no help!

Anonymous
We are expecting our third child, first girl, in August. Our families have a proud tradition of naming children for grandparents, aunts and uncles. It was no problem with our boys - Will and John. But my poor daughter - here are the name we have to choose from:

Cora
Norah
Laura
Gertrude

Middle Name possibilities are easier (aunts)

Ann
Rose
Marie
Elizabeth.

I was kind of happy with Cora Rose or Norah Anne, but friends have been underwhelmed. What sounds good to you?

Love the name Norah (though without the h)

I like Norah Rose.

Laura Elizabeth

I like Cora and Norah, and Elizabeth (or Ann)

Norah is really pretty. I like Cora too. That's a good name -- not very popular right now, but poised for a comeback thanks to Downton Abbey.

I like Norah Rose.

All of OP's names are super ugly, but I agree that this is the best of the choices. It's like knife in your eye, or butter knife in your eye.

except for gertrude, those are all great names!

My mom is Laura Elizabeth, so I like that one

If you don't like your choices, please feel free to break from this proud tradition. It's great that it's something you enjoy, but don't give your child a name you find boring or ugly, just to follow some arbitrary rule you've created for yourself. Use a family name for the middle name and choose a first name you love. I say this as someone who named her first child after family, but not the second child.

But it sounds like you found some pairings that you like, so what's the issue? Your friends are underwhelmed? Good news, they don't have a say.

I like Norah best with Will and John, I think any of the middle names would work

OP here. I know the names are kind of old - but I hadn't though of Norah Rose (I'd have to keep the old spelling of Norah though), and I think I could get happy with Cora Rose too. I love Laura Elizabeth!

I just have to rule out Gertrude though. I don't think that name is EVER going to trend back, no matter what!

Thank you! I'm open to other suggestions too! We've burned out and my DH just keeps saying - "anything but Gertrude!"
