Rushern Baker is supposed to be announcing the new school board members right now. Anyone have info?

| I got nothing, but I'm excited to hear about the appointees. Hopefully he got some solid people who are up for the challenge. |

Ok, via twitter I see that the appointees are:
Dr. Beverly Anderson Curtis Valentine Dr. Daniel Kaufman Anyone know these folks and have any thoughts? Obie Patterson's tweeting that Valentine is a grad of Morehouse and Harvard. |

Here's some details on the three appointees: http://hyattsville.patch.com/groups/schools/p/three-new-appointees-fill-out-pr-georges-school-board_dfd54481
Anderson is former VP of Academic Affairs for UDC and has a math education background. Kaufman has a strong communications background and connections with education policy. Valentine has two kids in the PGCPS system and also has a background in education policy reform and activism. It's going to be interesting to see how they work within the elected board and how quickly things can move forward. The BoE is doing first reading on the FY2014 reconciled budget this afternoon, and the CIP budget has been pulled from the agenda, so there's a lot these guys are going to have to jump right in on. |
Anderson and Kaufman are Bakers appointees while Valentine is the Parent Representive and appointed by the County Council. On paper, they all look like extremely well qualified people. Together with Segun Eubanks, the other Baker appointee, they should really change the dynamic of the board....hopefully for the better. At least now the majority of the School Board has more than a high school diploma....yes, I'm an education snob but these people are making major decisions about my kids education, so I think that should be a requirement for being on the board. Here is the press release from the County http://cms.princegeorgescountymd.gov/ExecutiveNews/default.aspx?itemid=1236 |
| This is encouraging! |

On paper I like these picks too. And 12:46, I second your snobbery. I think it is appropriate to be a little bit of an education snob when picking people to make decisions for an educational entity.
Personally, I'm a little worried about how long it takes for a couple of our pre-Rushern board members to feel threatened by the new crew and start causing problems. We've got some sitting members who seemed to view the current board as the setting for their own personal Game of Thrones. |
| Yep, I agree with all of you. |
| Seems promising! I hope try can all work together! |
