I had breast reduction surgery 14 years ago and now, at 38, I'm pregnant for the first time. I'd like to hear your experiences trying to breastfeed your baby knowing you have to complement with formula. What effects do you see in your baby? |
Any amount of breastmilk is good for the baby! If you want to breast feed- do it! Formula is not a bad thing. I've had to supplement b/c I have a different breast issue. The feedings just take a little longer and you have to plan ahead to bring a bottle when you go out of the house. Talk to a lactation consultant they can offer good info about your situation. |
This blog has a few entries about breastfeeding after a reduction:
http://www.girlsgonechild.net/ just search on breast reduction She wasn't able to express a lot of milk with her first child, but is having more results with the second. |
Also, www.bfar.org, is a great resource. I have had a couple of friends who attempted with mixed results, but they were both glad to try. They recommend working with a lactation consultant before birth to be prepared and probably also after.
Good luck! |
I was able to nurse until 6 months. I did give a regular supliment b/c my supply was on the low end. I got a lot of help from the lactation consultants at the hospital (Georgetown). Good Luck! |
