DD complaining of pain - no obvious cause??

Anonymous
For 24 hours DD has complained that her ear hurts. Well, it isn't her ear. On further exploration, the ridge of her skull behind her ear is red and slightly inflamed. I have tugged on her ear to try to isolate if it is only in this area and to rule out an outer ear infection. She complains that it hurts to lift her head from the pillow and it definitely hurts if I gently touch it. I don't think she is feverish as she has not axed like it. Of course, I can't confirm as the thermometer batteries are dead! Aaarrgghh. I have used a flashlight and magnifying glass - there are no "points" that would indicate a bug night.
Any ideas at all? ????

I had something similar when i was little. I cant remember what it was called but it had to be drained with a needle and that was it. I'd take her to the doctor. The fact that it is red, painful, and swollen indicates something is going on there.

OP here - I actually have been looking at it to see if some type of cyst is forming, but doesn't look like it. Lymph nodes maybe? I'm stuck as I can't take her to doctor tomorrow, but I don't want her to be in pain!!!

Go to the ER right now.

This could be mastoiditis. If it is, she needs antibiotics ASAP.

+1. This is exactly what I thought when I read the OP's post.

If what you say about her not wanting/being able to lift her head off the pillow because of the pain, this warrants a trip to the ER. Stop googling and trying to self diagnose. You don't want to have your daughter suffer permanent hearing damage if it is something like mastoiditis and you didn't want to take her to the ER because she didn't check off all the symptoms.

I thought mastoiditis was rare in the US? I was told for an ENT it happens when ear infections in third world countries go left untreated. Either way, it's a week day now so take your DD to her doctor if you haven't already sought medical attention.

You can go to an urgent care center. Faster and cheaper than an ER.

I had this and it turns out that it was an ear infection that cleared up with ciprodex drops. Of course, I did a lot of googling and mastoiditis does fit the descriptions, but it is a rare complication from an ear infection. I would definitely take her to the doctor though, since ear infections are quite painful and the pain can go from level 5 to level relatively quickly.

Op - how is she?

Was thinking is it her lymph node? They can get red and puffy, right behind ear.
