7th floor of Sibley

Anonymous
I head that Sibley has opened up part of its 7th floor to accomodate the overlow of patients requesting private rooms. Does anyone know how much of a difference this has made? A friend delivered there earlier this year and had to share a room. I'm hoping that won't be the case when I deliver!

When I last delivered at Sibley (July '07), I got bumped to a special floor; can't remember if it was the 7th floor or not. But it was a private, secluded area that one nurse told me was built by the Saudi Arabian government in the event that any of their diplomats living in the US need hospital care! It was very nice (by hospital standards) and definitely private. But, as I remember being specifically told, I was put there not because I had requested a private room, but because the hospital had overflow in the shared rooms. In other words, they only opened it because they literally ran out of bed space in the maternity ward.

I remember one of the doctors telling me about this seventh floor when I expressed concerns about not being able to get a private room. She said, don't worry, if they run out of private rooms, they also have the seventh floor or something like that. In reality, I was able to get a private room (supposedly the last room) so I never found out.

I was also bumped up to the 7th floor a few years ago -- at first I was put in a shared room with someone who had a C-section and a big family constantly visiting. It was very busy in the maternity ward, so they opened the 7th floor for a bunch of us (mostly 2nd time moms with easy deliveries). It was great up there -- nice and quiet. I think they only do it when they have a big overflow.

I was on the 7th floor after delivery in March '07 - same deal - used as overflow. I don't think the rooms were really any different than the regular postpartum rooms. It was much quieter than the maternity floor. On the downside, because it was out of the way, meals came later, docs on rounds were later, and the assigned nursing staff was smaller. That said, i'd chose it again in a flash (not that you get a choce) because of the noise.

Um, I'm not sure about this... I was at Sibley last year (Aug) and the postpartum rooms were all full so I had to stay the first night in our labor & delivery room. No 7th floor option here.
