| Our basement flooded from the storm a couple of days ago and now it stinks something awful. We have a dehumidifier running non-stop but nothing seems to help. Any advice? |
|
Not the OP, but having the same problem.
I would assume there is some mold or mildew, but I'd like to hear from others that have BTDT. |
| I have heard to pull it up so it can dry. A company that does flood clean up will bring lots of fans and advice. You may need to replace the padding but can keep the carpet. Ground water can really smell you may not be able to save it |
| Yeah, I do to ow what's going on with that. But I shampoo the carpet with regular cleaner AND Simple Solution, a pet stain cleaner. It really works. Keep the dehumidifier running though. It has to get completely dry. |
| For me, having BTDT, I would get rid of the carpet. The smell is mold. Even if you get rid of the smell, the mold is still there. When carpet gets wet, you have to immediately get rid of the water before mold has a chance to grow. That usually involves a heavy duty shop vac, big fans running 24/7 and big de-humidifiers. Best case scenario is that the mold is in the padding. You might try replacing it but you should be prepared to replace the carpet or live with it knowing there's mold in it. |
| Get a new carpet. |
| Unfortunately new carpet |
| New carpet, you ducked up by not drying out immediately |
| New carpet. Mold develops in 48 hours. |
| It is full of mold and mildew so it should be removed. Put linoleum down a.d throw rugs. |
Yes, if this doesn't work, definitely get a new carpet. |
linoleum is ghetto and trashy use at least ceramic |
| Use steam cleaner and mop to to dry the water and clean the stains from the carpet. Yeah, I agree neutralizing odor is really a daunting task but smart work can lead you to success. When all the water is gone, then just follow these steps to ensure clean and warm carpet. |
Real linoleum is not trashy. Vinyl would be questionable. Look for battleship linoleum |
| You have to replace the carpet. The smell is in the padding, underneath the carpet and will never leave. |
