We are taking our first trip (five days) without our dog and are anxious...can you recommend boarding or pet sitting? We rescued her from WARL last September and have never left her alone before. I don't know whether boarding or sitting will traumatize her less. Perhaps you can make a recommendation.
Thanks. |
I just booked a dogsitter for the summer using petvacay.com, which has a lot of sitter-options in Silver Spring. I think it is a better option than a traditional commercial boarding situation for a timid or excitable dog because it is in a home with at most another dog or two. The cost is reasonable ($40/day), certainly relative to what a house-sitter would cost. |
Crate Free Boarding In My Home - No Aggressive Dogs - Limit of 5 dogs
Leaving your dog at a kennel can be stressful for your pet and your pet won't get the personal attention I can give in my home while you are on vacation. I am home all day long with NO distractions or children to care for, so you won't need to worry while away because your dog will get my full attention along with 2 walks per day, a daily dog park visit, frequent bio-breaks, plenty of yard playtime, and lots of hugs & kisses. My goal is to help alleviate some of the stress your dog has from missing you. Dogs have feelings and I know how to be attentive to their needs and moods. It comes from lots of experience with pets and from my love for animals. Boarding fee ranges from $20 to $30, depending on the size of the dog.. Reply to this posting or call 240-899-8874 to discuss your specific needs and your dog's stay! Your dog will be glad you called. |
We have used The Dog Stay in DTSS (cage-free boarding). The Dog Stay is great for my younger dog but I am not sure my older dog enjoys it anymore. And, it is actually cheaper to have someone stay in our home. We also like http://www.fffpetsitting.com/ Fur, Fins and Feathers. $21 per visit or $80 a day to have someone stay at your home.
Good Luck! |
We like Paradise for Pets in Beltsville - its definitely for dogs and not people (ie, concrete floors, noisy) but the dogs are outside in mini back yards all day, paired with other dogs.
We like it for our dogs much better than traditional kennelling - I can't stand the thought of them in a cage most of the day let out for a dubious amount of "walks". Plus, Jonathan the manager tolerates my emails while we are out of town checking on my babies, and he usually reports back with whether they are alive or not ![]() |

I have a friend who does pet boarding in her home cage-free for vacations. I have no idea if she has any openings now as summer is her busiest time. Google Pino's Pampered Pets in Laurel. |
We've used them before, too--my dog was totally exhausted when we picked her up because she's been playing with other dogs the whole time. They do try to match temperaments, so they book the energetic goofs together, the laid-back calm ones together, etc. |
Happy Hooches is fantastic for our anxiety ridden rescue pup--not to mention, the price is unbeatable! Good luck, OP, and enjoy your trip! |
We use Cleverdog cage free boarding in Silver Spring. It's reasonable and they are good with anxious dogs (ours was before becoming a daycare regular there). |
OP here -- we went with Paradise for Pets and our dog was well cared for and happy upon return. ![]() |
