Best place to get carpet?

Anonymous
I am looking to get estimates for a ton of carpeting in NW DC. We need to do the whole basement, then also the stairs to the second floor, putting large bound carpets (not wall to wall thought) in the bedrooms and then wall to wall for the attic as well.

Any recs?

Thanks!

W.C. Fowler Carpet, 10554 Metropolitan Ave., Kensington, MD, 301.949.3400. I had a major renovation some years ago and the builder recommended them. I was skeptical at first but was pleasantly surprised by the flooring selections and the pricing, which I thougth was reasonable.

Best installers ~ or at least very good installers - very important. This can make/or break the overall quality look. Most carpet stores sell just about the same stuff, and most will match other offers.

So I need to find an installer first? Or will a carpet store have people the recommend?

Always, always, go to a Home Improvement Chain like Home Depot or Lowes. You will save at least 30% on the carpeting over a private carpet place, and those installers that the chains use are the guys that have the storefront carpet places anyway. Lowes, Home Depot and ServiceMaster are their bread and butter.

Worked in the carpeting business for ten (10) years.

Bump...So, Home Depot is the way to go? Has anyone tried Empire?

Empire sells horrible quality carpet. Go with a high quality carpet from home depot. They sub install out to local companies, are great to deal with service wise, and no one beats their prices. The only real reason to go to a local carpet store is if you're looking for something super special that the boxes don't carry.

Thank you, that's very helpful. I figured Empire was too good to be true, but man, those ads...They're so tempting!!

My contractor told me to go to Fowler.Their prices were ridiculous!!! I could have gone almost anywhere else and paid 30% less.

If you are ordering that much carpet - contact carpet manufacturers in Georgia (Georgia Carpet did ours but there are others). find the carpet you want at a store and then just tell Georgia Carpet the name of the carpet and how much you need. When you hire an installer, they will measure for you.

They will save you a ton of money on carpet. This only works if you are buying a lot of carpet.

Of course you need an installer to put it in and take delivery of the carpet. We had Ayoub carpet in Kensington install the carpet and the process was easy. Save us a lot of money in the end and I got really good carpet that would have been out of our price range otherwise.

Other installers can do it as well. Ayoub is a bit more expensive but they are very professional.
